Tacoma Moon Festival
Back in the day, Tacoma beat out Seattle to be the terminus for the Northern Pacific Railroad. With its natural deep water port, The City of Destiny seemed bound for glory. While Tacoma is great, Seattle became the major city in Washington. Like most major cities, Seattle has a thriving Chinatown and International District. Which begs the question, “Why doesn’t Tacoma have a Chinatown?”
The answer: Once the railroad was complete, locals… encouraged the Chinese railway workers to find new places to call home.
Thankfully, broader minds and bigger hearts have prevailed. As an acknowledgement of past wrongs and a celebration of the city’s multi-cultural makeup, Reconciliation Park was built on the edge of Commencement Bay. And each summer, The Moon Festival celebrates Tacoma’s immigrant cultures through food, performances and sharing.
